Community Historian, Former Charles City Mayor Sisson Passes Away

A community historian and former Charles City mayor has died.

Jeff Sisson served as the Mayor of Charles City from 1994-1995. He was also President of the Riverside Cemetery Association and the North Cedar Aviation Authority. Sisson was a member of the Lions and the Elks Clubs, and a supporter of the Floyd County Museum and Historical Society.

A Charles City Chamber & Tourism social media post describes Sisson as one of “the community’s top visionaries, (who) deeply cared about Charles City. He was a walking history book when it came to this community, and could tell a story with the best of them. For years he led walking tours for the Chamber and Main Street Charles City, captivating his audiences with tales of Charles City’s past.”

The Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home obituary on Sisson notes, “Jeff devoted countless hours to Charles City’s America’s Hometown Fourth of July Celebration, Party in the Park, and multiple RAGBRAI events. He was passionate about preserving local history, which he brought to life each year for eighth-grade history classes. For many seasons, he coached eighth-grade boys’ basketball at Charles City Junior High.”

A visitation for Sisson will be held Thursday (07.23) from 5 to 7 PM at Riverside Cemetery Chapel in Charles City. An outdoor memorial service will be held Friday (07.24) at 10 AM at Victory Park, near the suspension bridge.

Sisson passed away on Tuesday (07.21) at the age of 70.
