Ag Matters: Foreign Farmland Ownership

Is foreign ownership of U.S. farmland a real national security risk, or just political hype? That’s the question fueling debates across the country. Harrison Pittman with the National Agricultural Law Center tracks these farm policy battles, noting that opinions are deeply divided over whether out-of-country land buyers actually pose a threat to American agriculture.

Pittman says that’s a common theme throughout the discussion, with supporters and critics weighing the issue very differently.

He also says it’s important to look at the numbers when discussing foreign ownership, particularly when it comes to China.

Pittman points to an Arkansas case involving a Syngenta research property as an example of how this debate can produce different outcomes.

As Harrison Pittman of the National Agricultural Law Center explains, lawmakers debating foreign farmland ownership face a tough choice: protecting national security while safeguarding property rights and economic growth. These conflicting interests are fueling action nationwide, leading more than half of U.S. states to pass restrictions and driving new foreign ownership proposals in the federal Farm Bill.
