Farm Bill Expiration Leaves Rural Programs In Uncertainty

With the 2018 Farm Bill extension officially expired, Congress is once again facing a tight deadline on a long-term agriculture policy. Core safeguards like crop insurance and SNAP benefits remain unaffected for now, but several key conservation, trade, and rural development programs face immediate funding uncertainty.

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman reassured producers that administrative measures will prevent sudden operational disruptions through the end of the year, when commodity and dairy support measures are scheduled to expire. Bipartisan negotiations will continue over the congressional recess, but as Iowa Farmers Union President Aaron Lehman points out, the real cost of this ongoing delay is the predictable stability farm families depend on.
