Mason City Man Charged with Arson, Other Felonies

A Mason City man is now facing six new felony charges after his arrest Friday.

The Mason City Police Department has charged 27-year-old Lil Robert Barnes in connection with fires that damaged two Mason City businesses earlier this year.

MCPD says Barnes is charged with second-degree arson and second-degree burglary, both Class C felonies, related to the fire at L.D. ‘s Filling Station on March 17th. He’s also charged with

first- degree arson, second-degree burglary, and ongoing criminal conduct, all Class B felonies, for a fire at Coin Laundry Center on March 20th.

During the MCPD investigation, a search warrant was served at Barnes’s residence, where a coin machine valued over $19,000 was located. Authorities say it was stolen from K&R Car Wash on March 14th. For that, Barnes has been charged with first-degree theft – possession of stolen property, a Class C felony.

Bond for Barnes on the new charges was set at $20,000.

Court records show that in July, Barnes pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a controlled substance – third or subsequent offense, both Class D felonies. He was arrested on those charges March 2nd, shortly before his alleged crimes of arson and burglary.
