New Floyd County Supervisors Take Oath of Office Friday (12.30)

A pair of new Floyd County Board of Supervisors will be sworn into office Friday.

A special election in 2021 called for a switch from supervisors being elected at-large to a three-supervisor district in which each supervisor must reside in the district they represent. A new supervisor in each of the districts was elected last month.

Mark Kuhn won the District 1 seat, which now consists of Charles City Precinct 1, plus Scott, Union, Pleasant Grove, Ulster, Riverton and St. Charles North townships. Kuhn, who served as a County Supervisor previously, was elected to a two-year term.

Dennis Keifer won the District 2 seat to represent Charles City precincts 2 and 3, along with St. Charles Township North. Keifer’s term will be four years in length as will that for District 3, made up of Rockford, Rudd, Rock Grove, Floyd, Cedar and Niles townships.

Who will occupy the District 3 seat remains to be seen after Jeff Hawbaker, who won November 8th, declined the nomination a week-and-a-half later saying he could not devote the time needed for the job. An appointment to fill his seat is expected to be made during a special meet Monday morning at 8:30 am. Although, any eligible voter in the county could file a petition to force a special election for the position within 14 days of the appointment.

In the meantime, Kuhn and Keifer will take the oath of office at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon.
