TLC Makes Move to New Home in Former Charles City Middle School

Relocating The Learning Center (TLC) child care center into the 1970’s section of the former Charles City middle school building is underway.

TLC has been closed this week to make the move, which was made possible thanks to a huge donation from the Bill and Doris Fenholt family. Costs for remodeling TLC’s section of the building rose due to supply chain delays, product accessibility, increased costs and other factors, producing a funding GAP of $275,000, which the Fenholts covered completely.

TLC Board President Lisa Garden says the Fenholts’ contribution will be recognized prominently at their new location on behalf of their daughter, Karen VanderLee.

Garden also notes that Bill and Doris Fenholt, both 1947 Charles City grads, made a home for 38 foster children over the years.

TLC Director Pam Ost says the Fenholts’ generosity made relocation a reality, but they’re still seeking grants for other supplies.

Ost says they will reopen Monday with a “soft opening” to allow staff and TLC’s current 86 children get acquainted with the new location and then work through the waiting list to eventually provide child care for as many as 179 kids.
